A dental crown is a custom-made, tooth-shaped covering that fits over a damaged, decayed, or cracked natural tooth like a cap, in order to restore the shape and strength of the tooth. Crowns are fixed, prosthetic restorations made of a variety of different materials, such as porcelain, ceramic, acrylic resin or a mixture of these materials. Crowns look completely natural, and, once in place, will give you the beautiful smile you desire.
Reasons for Crowns
- restore decayed tooth
- restore cracked tooth
- restore injured tooth
- restore worn down tooth
- restore broken tooth
- reinforcement after root canal
- anchor a bridge
Receiving a Crown
- The tooth will be numbed.
- The natural tooth will be sculpted to provide the correct fit for the crown.
- Impressions will be taken.
- A custom crown will be fabricated based on the impressions.
- A temporary acrylic resin crown will be placed until the custom crown is back from the lab.
- The temporary crown is then removed and the custom crown fitted.
- If the proper fit is achieved, the crown is then cemented over the natural tooth.
With adherence to proper oral hygiene and given proper care, a crown restoration can last a lifetime.
